Empowering Employment: HANDS in Autism® Offers Vocational Rehabilitation Support for Individuals with Disabilities

With more than 15 years’ experience in working with transition-aged youth, young adults and adults with disabilities in vocational planning and skills development, we are eager to work with you!

HANDS in Autism® (referred to as HANDS from this point forward) is available as a vendor or specialty support service to assist families who are involved with Vocational Rehabilitation (VR). Our goal is to assist individuals in developing the skills and resources needed to pursue and maintain meaningful employment. While the HANDS team specializes in autism and related disabilities, the team works and has experience across a range of disabilities, functional levels, settings and age ranges, with statewide availability.

How VR and HANDS in Autism® Work Together:

If you or your loved one is experiencing difficulties in securing or sustaining employment, you may be eligible for VR services. The process begins with an application for VR services. If you meet VR eligibility criteria, your Vocational Rehabilitation Counselor (VRC) will work with you to determine your needs, vocational or work goals and help establish an Individualized Plan for Employment (IPE).

HANDS in Autism® can serve as a supportive service or resource for individuals seeking a job or who have educational, vocational and/or employment goals. The individual must
(1) qualify for VR services
(2) have participated in the discovery and IPE development process
(3) have a VR provider selected or in place
(4) have had a mutual conversation with their VRC
and provider to determine the need for HANDS’ to be involved as part of evaluation, readiness training or community-based support.

For example, if a participant does not qualify for behaviorist services, they may be referred to HANDS to receive coaching and support in job skill development as part of HANDS’ Evaluation and Job/Work Readiness offerings if warranted. Similarly, a participant that is having difficulty sustaining work may benefit from HANDS Community-Based Support to consult with both you and your VR provider.

Once an individual is employed and stable in their role, VR services typically conclude within 90 days; however, the total time VR is involved will be determined on goals set in your IPE and the needed time and support to reach those.
