Participants learned how Firefly Children & Family Alliance works to prevent family crises, intervene when additional assistance is needed, protect children and support young people transitioning toward independent living.
The conversation highlighted Community Partners for Child Safety, a prevention program that connects eligible families with community-based services without requiring involvement in the child welfare system. Support may include:
- In-home assessments to identify stressors and safety concerns
- Collaborative goal setting based on each family’s priorities
- Connections to early intervention, respite care, counseling, mental-health services and disability-specific resources
- Limited short-term assistance and budgeting guidance during immediate challenges
The session also introduced five protective factors that can strengthen families and reduce risk: parental resilience, social connections, concrete support during times of need, knowledge of parenting and child development, and children’s social and emotional competence.
For families of individuals with disabilities, the discussion emphasized safety planning, caregiver support, service navigation, parenting education and connections to Indiana organizations such as Indiana 211, Indiana Disability Rights, The Arc of Indiana, Self-Advocates of Indiana, Autism Society of Indiana, First Steps and HANDS in Autism®.
