Over the past two decades, autism prevalence has increased by 384%, emphasizing the need for coordinated, high-quality information and responsive services. As the number of individuals identified with ASD continues to grow, the role of community awareness becomes increasingly vital. Well-informed communities are better positioned to support individuals with ASD in achieving optimal health and reaching their full potential.
A key component of Goal 1 is sharing both general and autism-specific knowledge with a broad range of stakeholders including individuals with ASD, families, service providers, educators, healthcare professionals, and community members who regularly interact with individuals on the spectrum. This level of knowledge-sharing helps build inclusive, supportive environments where individuals with ASD feel connected and understood.
Improving access to resources is another central priority. By identifying common needs across the state and sharing effective practices, the IIACC works to reduce gaps in support and ensure families and service teams can access timely information and tools. Strengthened information sharing also enhances decision making at the state and local levels, ensuring that leaders have the insights they need to develop effective, equitable policies related to ASD.
For caregivers and families, increased autism awareness can reduce stress and burnout by fostering more understanding and responsive community environments. When communities are informed, supportive, and engaged, the day-to-day challenges of caring for an individual with ASD become more manageable, and opportunities for inclusion and participation expand.
IIACC continues to champion awareness, collaboration, and connection helping build a stronger Indiana where individuals with ASD can thrive.
