Indianapolis — Volunteers from the HANDS program recently stepped up to support both hospital operations and new interns at Riley Children’s Hospital, by leading a hands-on training session focused on cleaning and sanitizing the hospital’s iconic red wagons — essential tools used daily to help transport young patients and families throughout the facility. As part of the session, experienced HANDS volunteers worked alongside new volunteer interns in a “Wagon Round-Up” — demonstrating proper collection, cleaning, and sanitization techniques to ensure that each wagon remains safe and ready for the children who rely on them. This workshop not only helped keep equipment in excellent condition but also gave the interns practical experience in the hospital’s volunteer routines. (Facebook)
The red wagons at Riley hold special significance for patients and families, symbolizing comfort, connection, and care during hospital visits. Keeping these wagons clean and operational supports infection control and enhances the overall patient experience. (Riley Children's Foundation)
Hospital and volunteer leaders say hands-on training like this helps build confidence and teamwork among new volunteers, strengthening the overall volunteer services program. The collaboration between seasoned HANDS members and newer interns reflects Riley’s focus on compassionate service and community engagement.
